Within
the Botanicus complex we have large gardens of
currently
more than 236 hec tare
which were constructed in the spring of 1999 on
strict organic principles and which take as their
parameters the original family ownership plots
of
100 years ago. Hedges, fences and walls faithfully
reproduce the pre-1948 landscape, and allow for
a series of differing areas dedicated
to a number of horticultural uses. Already established
is a collection of climbing English roses in an
Arbour and small rosarium, within a Monks garden
which includes of course a kitchen garden of herbs
such as basil, marjoram, coriander and thymes,
a medicinal plant collection in raised beds, a
collection
of species of botanical interest and beauty, and
a croquet lawn edged in espaliered Limes. There
is also a Chinese Garden with a |
wide
selection of non-indigenous herbs and unusual
vegetables, mostly of asian origin, and two Vegetable
areas demonstrating
organic production of both common and arcane foodstuffs,
as well as inter-planting techniques for com panion
plant tests. Other dedicated areas are used for
culinary, cosmetic and medicinal herb production
. The whole complex is supported by a green manure
and composting centre, thus completing the cucle
which we hope will demonstrate the resititution
of soil health and vitality in this area. Everything
is hand weeded, all waste is recycled and within
one season appreciable improvements in soil structure,
micro-climates and beneficial fauna have been
noted.
For the enjoyment of young
and old three mazes ha ve
been built within the gardens, each of which carries
its own historic and symbolic message emphasising
our regeneration of this Village and District,
which will continue with additional garden structures
over the coming years.
